John Moyle Memorial Field Days
It looks like the VK2BOZ team will be heading to Coolah Tops for the Field Days. Cris (Vk2boz), Lindsey (vk2wjd) & myself (Vk2fmia) have made final arrangements for the contest this weekend.
The JMMFD is one of the biggest radio contests in Australia with teams & single operators competing over a 24 hour period to see who can log the most contacts from around Australia & the world. The aim is to encourage and provide familiarisation with portable and field operation, and provide training for emergency situations. The rules are therefore specifically designed and focussed to encourage field operations.
The contest is run each year in memory of the late john Moyle who was a long term editor of the Wireless Weekly, (- later Radio & Hobbies – later Radio Television & Hobbies) from 1947 until his untimely death in 1960. He served in the RAAF with distinction and was responsible for a number of innovative solutions to keeping radio and radar equipment working under wartime & difficult working conditions.
The WIA decided that a suitable long term memorial to John Moyle would be a Field Day with a focus on portable or field operation. The contest has been conducted annually ever since.
We will be competing from a private property just before the entrance to Coolah Tops National Park at an altitude of 1020 meters ASL. the site we have chosen should give us a good shot into Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia, the Northern Territory & Queensland on VHF & UHF.Chris will be doing this side of the contest & will be putting out 400 watts on the 2 meter & 70 cm bands & 100 watts on 1.2 Gigahertz. Lindsey will be on 160 & 6 meters with 100 watts & I will be on 80,40,30,20,15 & 10 meters with 100 watts.
I am leaving for the contest site on Friday morning, meeting up with the guys friday afternoon to set up the station. Weather will be hot on Friday with temps around 39 deg.C with a cool change expected on Saturday.
Really looking forward to the weekend, it has been a couple of years since the team competed. This is a new venue & it will be interesting to see how things go.
Hope to work you on the air.
