Dowe National Park VKFF-585

Visited Dowe National Park on Saturday afternoon the 14th of February 2015 to put out a few calls as part of the World Wide Flora & Fauna program for Amateur Radio operators.

The park is located between Gunnedah & Manilla, NSW, adjacent to Lake Keepit and is around 50 Km from my home town of Barraba. It was taken over by National Parks in 2005. It was previously a state forest of around 385 Hectares, comprising mainly of Cypress Pine & White Box.

Arrived at around 4 pm, the gate into the park was locked as there is no vehicle access into the park, but having travelled through the park when it was still a State Forest I knew there was a clearing not far up the road. After grabbing the backpack which I had placed the Icom IC-7000, a Dipole for 40 meters and two Gel Cell motorcycle batteries along with a cold drink and food & other bits & pieces, headed off to set up.

Took around 20 minutes to get to the clearing, finding a suitable place to hang the antenna as an inverted V & a shady spot to set up the radio.

Started calling CQ on 7.144 mhz at 06:00 UTC as planned. After a few calls I got a response from Peter, VK3PQ in Melbourne for a 56 report, Peter was a good 59. The band was in pretty good condition apart from the odd static crash. Continued calling, getting a steady response.

Had a short break & scrolled around the band and found Brett, VK4FTWO on 7.110 mhz working his first park. We exchanged a signal report of 59 both ways. Also worked Rob VK4FFAB on the same frequency before returning to 7.144. Got a few more in the log before having another look around the band finding ZL2GTB, Gordon calling CQ. Worked Gordon for 56. Found Paul, VK5PAS finishing a QSO on 7.125 & gave him a call. Very unusual to work Paul at his home station!

Paul let me stay on that frequency & also put up a spot on parksnpeaks. It did not take long for the calls to come in. The system is working quite well!, a good steady stream for the next hour kept me on the hop.

Worked Terry, VK4AAT on AM for something a little different, before Rodger, VK4YB came blasting in at 40 over just as the sun was setting.

Ended up with 28 in the log, decided to pack up as the calls were thinning out a bit, probably due to it being Valentines Day, the YL`s probably keen to get to the restaurant!. Sorry, no photos this time, forgot to put the camera in the backpack!
